John Smith runs a horticultural education and advice consultancy company. He previously managed and lectured at Suntrap Garden and Lifelong Learning Centre near Edinburgh on behalf of Oatridge College who he worked with for 24 years. John’s interest in horticulture has seen him working on projects as diverse as the King’s Palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to Pallet Gardens at Gardening Scotland. Currently a council member with the Scottish Gardeners forum he piloted the first Grow and Learn award on behalf of the Caley (Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society) after working with groups of adults and children with learning difficulties at Suntrap Garden. Having developed an interest in horticultural therapy John gained a Diploma from Coventry University in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture. Now semi retired, he continues to work with various schools, colleges, community groups and individuals to promote gardening and horticulture to as wide and varied an audience as possible.
