The successful candidate will work with existing volunteers to regenerate the Walled Garden at Silverburn Park www.silverburnpark.co.uk

Experience and knowledge of ornamental gardening is required. A good level of physical fitness is needed, as is the ability to work outdoors during winter and spring. Experience of leading volunteers is desirable.

Full Job Description & Person Specification:

The successful applicant will be inducted into the role by our Walled Garden Leader, who has a wealth of experience in community horticulture. Plans for the regeneration of the garden will be provided, as well as guidance on the tasks required during the cold months.

 The post also requires the leadership of a small volunteer group in the Walled Garden for at least one session per week, using hand tools only and with an awareness of individual abilities.

 Tasks will include:

  • plant identification
  • hedge cutting
  • lawn mowing and strimming
  • seasonal planting and pruning
  • weeding and removal of invasive species
  • rabbit-proofing designated areas
  • maintaining hand tools and keeping workspaces safe and functional
  • litter-picking and emptying bins
  • shovelling snow and gritting paths
  • other ad hoc tasks

We are looking for the following attributes:

 

  • A good understanding of ornamental horticulture, with previous experience a distinct advantage
  • Knowledge of the full range of gardening tools and techniques
  • Experience of leading volunteers
  • The ability to lead and motivate volunteers
  • An understanding of risk assessment and safe working practices
  • Patience, good humour, and an ability to communicate to a range of colleagues and visitors
  • A love of working outdoors in all weather
  • A methodical approach to fulfilling agreed tasks
  • The flexibility to take on ad hoc tasks in support of the wider park
  • Qualifications in horticulture and power tools are advantageous
